Spring Break

My spring break consisted of sleeping, eating delicious food, and spending time with loved ones. I caught up on modern family and began watching the X-files. My friend and I drove around for over an hour in search of “Cups” a fro yo shop that despite the chilly weather, managed to have lines extending outside. Needless to say, the fro yo was worth the wait. On St. Patrick’s Day, I ventured to the Met with my boyfriend, Mike, and his future roommate Andrew. We strolled from 34th to 82nd, passing myriad drunk individuals celebrating their “Irish heritage” and cutting across Central Park. When we finally arrived, Mike and Andrew ventured off to the musical instruments while I headed to the European paintings. I attempted to locate all the paintings in my art history text book. This day, which lasted from 9 am until 3 am, was incredibly eventful and a nice change of pace from my previous coach potato state.

North Carolina Blues

This past spring break I went to Burnsville, North Carolina with my roommate and five other of my closest friends. After a 13 hour train ride to Charlotte, NC, we arrived late Sunday night. While we there, we spent lot of time catching up on sleep and enjoying the warm weather and sun. It was nice to catch up with friends and not worry about school for a couple days.

Good Times in NYC

My best friend flew into Syracuse from Ohio on Thursday before break. I spent the day showing her around and then we got on a bus at 1 am for NYC. We got there at 7am and then didn’t stop going until Sunday afternoon. It was exhausting but fun. We stuck to the usual touristy things: Natural History Museum, Central Park, Giant Toy/Candy Stores, Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island, Broadway show and of course, shopping. My favorite part was seeing my favorite Broadway show, Chicago. It was AMAZING! On Sunday, she went back to Ohio and I headed to DC to spend time with some long lost family. I had a good break, for the most part. Here are some of my fav pics from NYC.

Spring Break

Over spring break I went to Florida with some friends and family.  We went to Walt Disney World almost everyday.  The lines were very long.  Some rides had lines up to 130 minutes.  Although, the weather was perfect.  It was sunny and 85 almost everyday.  Besides Syracuse losing in the NCAA tournament, it was a great vacation.

Spring Break

I spent my spring break in Hallandale Beach, Florida with my mom. The weather was incredible! Every day was sunny with clear skies and the water was beautiful. We met up with my friend and her mom in South Beach, and spent a day there. We spent the rest of the time soaking up the sun and working on our tans!

Spring Break

This is where I spent my entire break. I took advantage of a week without a sleep talking roommate and got 12 hours of sleep everyday.  I  really only getting out of bed to watch the NCAA tournament. The one highlight of my break would be I went to Washington D.C. to watch one of my best friends play UCONN in the tournament, but his team lost by 30.  I would of taken a picture in the car, but I slept the whole car ride too.  I also went to Atlantic City for a night, but I was the only person there under 70 so I didn’t stay long.

Spring Break

My entire spring break consisted of sleeping and watching four college basketball games simultaneously thanks to March Madness On Demand. As fun as listening to Gus Johnson call games in all his glory and of course enjoying gusjohnsongetsbuckets.com I needed other distractions. One of which was The Onion where I read one article in particular that I applies to the class and the for some reason confusing concept of release forms. Enjoy!

Storytelling Event – Peter Beinart

I saw Peter Beinart, Journalist for the Daily Beast, speak about his recent article in the New York Review of Books.  The article is titled The Failure of the American Jewish Establishment, and in a nut shell the article is about the downward spiral of Zionism in the United States.  According to Beinart, liberal democratic Zionism in the United States has grown up along individualism, an individualism that makes young Jews feel separated from Israel.  His point is that Israel in connection to Israel is in collapse, and during his lecture he spoke of the article in question as well as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

As a young American growing up with many Jewish friends, I relate to the Beinart’s argument.  He spoke of how young American Jews connect to liberalism in America, but they don’t connect to Israel and the problems their fellow Zionists are facing there.  It was really interesting to hear someone of Zionist faith to criticize his fellow American citizens so forwardly, but his argument really made sense.  The individualism of American Zionists is connected to the separation of church and state, or for the Jewish – of temple and state.

Although I did not understand many of the terms or theories Beinart mentioned, the experience was as much of a learning experience for me as it was entertaining.  As a student of political science, I was intrigued by Beinart’s prose.  His lecture showcased one of the many important features of journalism, to educate and inspire people to learn.  This lecture not only inspired me to learn, but it inspired me to work towards a higher purpose – government.

The final argument of Bienart’s article was that in Israel as well as many other places around the world- there is much debate about what it means to be a sovereign state.  The conflict within the debate is the struggle between preserving sovereignty and moral integrity of a people.  The concept is very advanced, but I personally find it intriguing.  It is great that a journalist can use analytical tools to pick apart literature and draw such broad conclusions about current events.   This is a form of journalism that I was not aware of, but after hearing this lecture I will be sure to read as much as I can about analytical journalism to educate myself.

Spring Break 2011

I took a couple of pictures to document my spring break.  I didn’t do anything special, but the vacation was much needed.

This is a picture of my brother and I standing within the columns of the dome.  He wouldn’t believe me that the dome-clap was used as sound effect for the star wars movies.

This is a picture of the Up-words board while I was playing with my friends.  It isn’t of the whole board specifically, but it shows my mastery of the game as I spelled the word Cairo.  This wasn’t the most advanced word in the game, I threw down the word Swahili as well haha.

This is a picture of my boyfriend and I in Boston.  I live 45 minutes out side of Boston, but my parents had only brought my there a couple of times.  We went to pick up my best friend from Tufts so that she could go home for her spring break.

Lastly, this is a picture of a woodchuck that my brother saw when my dad and brother were dropping me off back at school.  It was weird, mostly because I had never seen a woodchuck before and also because my dad was really excited to see it.

Spring Break 2011

Over Spring Break, I went to Florida to visit my mother’s family. While my cousin and I were driving on A1A, a highway in Florida, we passed this tree rooted next to the inter-coastal.   The tree was very interesting.  It had a very large base that would have been perfect for climbing and was spread out in many directions.  In my mind, it resembled something one would see in Africa.  We were in a big hurry or else we would have stopped longer to climb it.
