Ready play one-Jing Long

Image result for ready player one

first of all, this movie is not just about games. Even if you don’t understand the stalks, it will not affect the movie and you should not be deceived by those propaganda. After all, it tells the story of a young hero who saves the world. Even I can say that its story is not new. Like most games, it is a story like this, but you have seen it. You will say, wow, how could it be so cool? This is also our players, who have been trying to tell you for so many years. It did it for us. Tell everyone. “The game world is really cool.”

The protagonist changed his body at the last second, and we saw a lot, but we still feel bloody. Its real strength lies in the fact that the story of an ‘old school’ is very solid with industry. Some people say that the plot is simple. Believe me, if you want to make a story with so many elements and even build a worldview, then the main story The simpler the better.’ As for whether the film is worth watching, let’s just say, if you like to watch the robot descend from the sky, you will applaud. In fact, when I watched, the applause of the movie theater, I almost got up from my chair.

Of course, if you don’t like robots, it doesn’t matter. You always like those dreamy visual effects. You always like Avatar. Not to mention changing people, men and women all like it. So, in retrospect, is this movie about games? Not all is, if you think so, you will find it has a lot of film, then it talks about film culture? Nor is it that the related films appearing in this movie, whether it is King Kong, Jurassic, Terminator, or Shining, or returning to the future, only represent a certain category in the movie, or in some places. Have a commonality.

Documentary: blackfish-Jing Long

Recently saw a documentary – “blackfish” It is the story of a killer whale named Titcomb. On the one hand, it is a star animal in the Ocean Park, and there are numerous fans. On the other hand, it was shut down for twenty-five years, during which three people were killed. The last one is its trainer. Some people say that it is a carnivorous animal and it is natural. Some people say that it has been shut down for too long. Through this documentary, I learned the sadness and misery behind the Ocean Park Carnival. The beginning of the story is a tragedy.Image result for best documentaries blackfish

Twenty-five years ago (counted from 2010), a group of people was driving a group of killer whales. The sound of the locator’s ticking, the noise of the plane and the speedboat engine, the buzz of the bomb, the cheering screams of the people, and a group of killer whale were forced into the bay. The adult male killer whales knew what was going on. They volunteered to act as bait, leading the whalers to a dead end, while the female killer whales, with their young killer whale, dive to another bay. All this can’t escape the observers on the plane. A strong, young killer whale was arrested and picked by the buyer. On the other side, the adult killer whale outside the fence had been reluctant to leave for a long time, even if the young killer whale had been taken away.

Tiricum was arrested at this time, it was only 2 years old, but because of the huge body, was selected by Orlando Ocean Park. It is smart and has strong learning ability. It soon became the star of Ocean Park and brought great benefits to Ocean Park. Animal-loving children, curious adults, tourists all over the country, and men and women who are attracted to come to become trainers are in constant pursuit. This is a carnival, a carnival that shows the friendship between humans and animals.

“With Love” Final Post Update

It takes me quite a long time to get the very rough cut since I have so much footage, which can last 3 hours. It takes so much time to filter each footage, watch them over and refine them over and over again. It gives me a lesson that I need to plan better in the pre-production so that I do not get too many useless footage, which takes time to film and especially to edit.

I have a plenty of fine B-rolls, but the interview for Venus is not ideal in terms of focus, lighting, background. Therefore, I decide to reshoot Venus’ interview. I will contact her this week to figure out what time she is available for this extra interview. By the way, Adam’s interview is great.

I have developed quite a good relationship with Venus and Adam, so I think Venus will be fine with me for an extra interview. Then, I will assemble footage again and polish it for Monday.

I hope everyone’s documentary is going well.

There’s a Good to Fair Chance I’m Just Dumb

I still don’t fully understand what bitcoin is, or perhaps more accurately, I don’t know how it works. I guess I don’t even know what I don’t know about it. I understand that ultimately all forms of currency only have value because we assign it to them, but I have a hard time wrapping my head around how bitcoin or any crypto currency for that matter, has any value whatsoever. I recently watched the documentary Banking for Bitcoin, in hopes of better understanding the world of crypto currency. I found the documentary to be very interesting, although I don’t know if it succeeded in what it was trying to do. I say this because I still don’t understand the subject it was supposed to teach me about. I think therein lies an important lesson that all of us can take away in our own documentaries.

That lesson is that we have to always be mindful and aware of our audiences, and furthermore the message that we want our audience to take away. It can be extremely difficult to anticipate how to disseminate a particular idea, or how someone will react to a particular story, or method of storytelling. Nonetheless, it is our duty as filmmakers, especially documentary filmmakers, to do our best in this endeavor. I am somewhat disappointed that this documentary didn’t give me the knowledge to get rich quick off of bitcoin, but oh well. I guess I’ll have to settle for the film making insights.

Sometimes People are the Worst

I recently saw the documentary Welcome to Leith, and it blew my mind on so many levels. The basic premise is that in 2012 a man moved to a small North Dakota town with a population of 16, in hopes of starting a white supremacists community.  To start with, as a New Yorker, the idea of a town of 16 is mind boggling to me. The idea of a white supremacists community being built from the ground up is also absolutely repugnant. The documentary almost plays out as a horror movie, with the most horrific part being that it is a true story. As disgusting as the idea is, it is encouraging to see the way the community, and members of the surrounding communities rallied against this white supremacist and attempted to force him out. It is equally disheartening however, to see that people moved to the town because they liked the idea. This is especially true given the current political climate and recent events such as those in Charlottesville.

The documentary is both shocking and thought provoking. The primary emotion it made me feel was anger. The very premise is sickening and to see it spreading more and more only makes me angrier. The primary defense for allowing the man to stay is a freedom of speech argument. I’m a huge supporter of freedom of speech but man oh man does this push past my limits. It is interesting to consider how dangerous the precedent of forcing someone out of a town because of their beliefs is, but at the same time, fuck Nazis.

One of the most interesting things to me however, was that the documentary was shot on a budget of 60,000, which was raised via a gofundme campaign. The fact that it was shot for such a low budget really reinforces to me that we can make thought provoking and meaningful documentaries, even as students on low budgets.

“With Love” Restaurant Update

The week before spring break, I went to the restaurant to shoot some B-rolls on Wednesday with one of my friends. We got some decent footage of which the restaurant was running.

I was planning to shoot the interview on Friday, but I did not expect the cage closed on Friday so I was not able to borrow the lighting kit, which is crucial to the interview setting. Therefore, I had to cancel the interview schedule on Friday before the spring break.

One of the current difficulties in this project is always scheduling. Since the restaurant is open only in a limited time plus my academic schedule, the only time that I can go to the restaurant is Wednesday noon and Friday night. Venus, who is the main character in this documentary, and Adam, who is the restaurant owner, are quite busy. Therefore, it is hard to schedule with them.

I will plan for interview shooting this week or next week and do a rough cut when I get the interview down.

“With Love” Restaurant Introduction

A couple weeks ago, I visited ” With Love” restaurant, which is located at North Salina street in Syracuse, NY. I met with Adam, who is the owner of the restaurant. He briefly introduced me the concept of the restaurant and three lines of how this restaurant is running. People who work in this restaurant are all students of the “with love” program.

The first line is the waiters/waitresses line. They would learn manners such as hospitality, control of emotion, etc. in the restaurant for a short period of time. Then, they would be sent out to fine restaurants to work.

The second line is the cook line. The cooks here are trained from several months to a year depending on when they reach the pass line. When they are proficient with their cooking skills, they also will be sent out to fine restaurants to work.

The third line is the entrepreneur line. Students in this restaurant can choose to become an entrepreneur. Venus is the current entrepreneur resident in this restaurant. She is taking charge of the menu for 6 months. The cuisine changes every six months, and the menu changes every two months.

The restaurant is very cozy and nicely furnished. Venus fed me some food back in the kitchen, and it tasted so good. Come and visit “With Love”, and you will have a new experience!

Murphy’s Law

As we approach the middle of the semester it is time to put all of our plans into action. My documentary has changed to focus on female hip-hop artists and how both the industry and, the public and media treat them. It’s a topic I’m passionate about and plan to be in women in the Hip Hop industry.  Joanna and I were set to have our first day of shooting this past Saturday, March 3 but Syracuse had other plans for us. The snowiest day of winter took place on Friday. It did not stop. It snowed so much that the university canceled a full day of classes. This meant the CAGE was closed and we couldn’t retrieve our equipment for the weekend. Even if we were able to hike through the snow to Newhouse, many of our interviewees canceled because of the blistering weather. In addition, I was too slow in responding to two emails that could have given me permission to access the equipment in a short window. Mission not accomplished.

I blame Murphy’s Law, if something can go wrong it will. Joanna and I have made plans to reschedule our first day of shooting interviews for Tuesday, March 6. The positive of this situation is that it allowed us more time to solidify our questions and conduct more research on the look of our documentary. I’ve watched countless interviews with female rappers and a few documentaries to steal ideas for shot angles. My major concerns moving forward is sound. We will use a boom mic and lavaliers to capture sound on two channels.

Lessons learned: over prepare and add email alerts to my phone. Fingers crossed for Tuesday.

Another Way of Watching “Documentaries”

In my previous blog post, I talked about the importance of essentially consuming good content that serves as an example to strive for, or as inspiration for our own projects. One thing that I’ve often noticed about documentaries is the relative lack of humor in them, and in the genre as a whole. On some level this isn’t surprising given the subject matter of a lot of documentaries, it would be odd for example for a in depth documentary about the opioid epidemic or the war in Afghanistan to crack a ton of jokes. However, even less serious topics such as sports or esports in particular are rarely anything other than serious.

I however think there is certainly room within the genre for more humor, at least with certain topics, but it is hard to find good, professionally produced examples. In the absence of such examples, I have found mockumentaries to be a close substitute. Mockumentaries still follow most traditional documentary formats and conventions, just usually with less serious subject matter. Because of this, they are still relevant examples for some of the technical aspects of documentary filmmaking. In fact, in TRF 400 (cinematography) I made a mockumentary/reality for my “non-fiction” piece. While the content was staged, the method of lighting for the interviews is directly applicable to actual documentary interviews.

With this in mind, there are plenty of good mockumentaries, especially television shows. The Office and Parks and Rec come to mind immediately. One of the best examples I’ve seen however is the HBO mockumentary-comedy “7 days in Hell”. It is shot exactly the way a serious ESPN 30 for 30 would be, and is sound from a technical point of view, but with a humorous and fake subject matter. I also happen to think it’s decently funny, although not riotously so, and it certainly isn’t for everyone.

Great Source of Short Documentaries

One thing that I think is incredibly important and helpful for us to do while we make our documentary, is to watch as many good documentaries as possible. Part of being a good filmmaker in general, means watching a lot of good films. However, it at times seems a little challenging to find good examples of short documentaries. Feature length ones are much more commonly known and easy to find, documentaries such as Black Fish or Bowling for Columbine. I’m not sure if there is a short form documentary with a similar level of notoriety.

One place where I have found several good examples, is on the YouTube channel for Vice. They have short documentaries ranging from 8 minutes long, to full length features, and cover topics ranging from the opioid epidemic, to esports.  In fact, one of their documentary shorts entitled “Competing in America’s Biggest Fighting Game Tournament: Evo 2017” is a good representation of what I initially had in mind when I pitched my original idea. It is a little on the longer side, clocking in at 20 minutes, but it covers 2 particular players as they advance in a particular tournament.

I think it is a good short form piece, and provides a good template for producing a short documentary that follows only 1 or 2 specific subjects, and that has a very specific and narrow focus. However, the access that they had was very different from the access I had in attempting my documentary, and in a way served to drive home to me that mine was likely not going to turn out the way I had originally envisioned.
